It is an evergreen shrub of the Myrtaceae family, typical of the Mediterranean areas. In Sardinia this plant is used for weaving, but also for its medicinal and aromatic properties and as an ingredient of local cuisine. It grows in coastal hilly areas preferably in idiomorphic soils, as well as in the surroundings of streams and springs. Its numerous stalks are thin and resistant, and are used to make baskets and hampers or as aesthetic ornament of handiworks.
