To give greater strength to the weaving it is indispensable that the weft fibers are taut and that the spaces between one stitch and the next (the shed) are not too great. The plant fibers, with the exception of sea hay, must be moistened during the process to increase their flexibility.
The following types of stitching can be used:
− fixed stitch, each coil is fastened by a stitch made with a needle;
− twisted stitch or wide point stitch where the needle stitch occurs after several spirals.
− chain stitch where one spiral is joined to the next by fixing the fiber to the previous spiral.
The finest, oldest and most durable baskets are made using the fixed stitch.
