Fishing nets

In the fishing ports of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, fishing nets are frequently made of intersecting threads, knotted together at regular intervals to form diamond-shaped meshes with varying sizes and strength according to their usage. The fibers used are usually hemp, coconut, horsehair and other materials depending on the type and the geographical area. The nets are created using the skill of man and his knowledge of his prey. The construction tools were simple: a spool on which to wind the thread, scissors and modani (wooden cylindrical instruments used to measure the size of the mesh). The nets were made in large rectangular sections that were then joined together.
