SEA HAY

SEA HAY OR SPARTO PUNGENTE OR AMMOFILA (Ammophila Littoralis Rothm)

Graminaceous plant that grows on sand dunes in coastal areas. It has long stems that form dense bushes and rigid, sharp-tipped, rounded, resistant gray-green leaves. It is harvested in late spring and early summer, usually during the hottest time of the day when the fibers are less resistant to cutting. In basketmaking it is used for the warp spiral in small baskets and corbule. The main production and distribution centers are Castelsardo Campidano di Cagliari (Sinnai, Quartu Sant’Elena) and Campidano di Oristano (San Vero Milis).
