Stramma (Mauritania grass)

This cespitose plant of the Gramineae family grows on arid and sandy soils. Its stems are rigid and strong, its leaves are long (up to 1.5 m) and rough. It is common in south-western Sardinia, especially in Marmilla and Trexenta, and sporadic in Santa Teresa, Capo Figari, Ulassai and Samugheo. Its leaves are very resistant and flexible, and are used for cords and ropes, mats, strings, sieves, to make the bottom of rush tools or to cane chairs.
