Seagrass

This is a graminaceous plant which grows on sand dunes of coastal areas. Its long stems make thick bushes; its rolled gray-green leaves are stiff, sharp and resistant. Leaves are gathered in late spring and early summer, usually during the hottest hours of the day, when the fibers are easier to cut. In weaving seagrass is used to create the warping loops of small baskets, corbule and hampers made with a coiled or intertwined weaving technique.

Seagrass baskets are made in Castelsardo, Campidano (Sinnai, Quartu Sant’Elena); Campidano di Oristano (San Vero Milis).
